How to read a ruler

A ruler is two counting systems printed on one stick, and most reading mistakes come from mixing them. This page covers both systems, the printable ruler above for when there is no stick in the house, and the one honest caveat about screens. The ruler prints true at 100% scale and carries its own proof: a bank card outline whose size is fixed by an international standard, the same reference the DPI test uses to measure mice.

The metric side: count millimetres

The numbered marks are centimetres. Between any two of them sit ten small marks: millimetres, with the fifth drawn taller as a landmark. To read a length, take the last centimetre number the object passes, then count the millimetre marks past it. Past the 6 and four small marks along is 6.4 cm, which is the same statement as 64 mm. Metric reading is just that counting; there are no fractions to reduce.

For lengths that fall between millimetre marks, estimate tenths by eye and say so: 64.5 mm claims more than a school ruler can honestly deliver, and "just under 64 and a half" is a truthful reading. A ruler measures to its smallest mark; everything finer is estimation.

The inch side: halve, then halve again

Inch rulers subdivide by halving: the tallest mark between numbers is the half inch, the next size down quarters, then eighths, then sixteenths on most rulers. To read a position, find the largest mark at or before it and count what remains in the smallest unit: two small marks past 2 on a sixteenths ruler is 2 and 2/16, which reduces to 2 1/8 inches.

The practical trick is to read the mark SIZES, not to count every tick: a mark as tall as the half-inch mark is a half, the next height is a quarter, and only the finest positions need counting in sixteenths. Fractions reduce when both numbers are even, and rulers are built so the common readings land on the big marks.

Converting between the sides

One inch is exactly 25.4 mm; the two scales above share their zero so the equivalence is visible directly. A quarter inch is 6.35 mm, a half inch 12.7 mm, one centimetre about 0.394 in. When a measurement will be used in arithmetic, convert once at the end rather than per reading; every conversion is a rounding opportunity.

Verifying any ruler, including this one

Rulers are cheap objects and printed ones pass through a print dialog that may quietly rescale them, so verify before trusting: lay a bank card on the printed card outline above. The card is 85.60 mm long by standard, every card, everywhere. If the outline and the card agree, the print came out at true scale; if the outline is short, the print dialog scaled the page, and the fix is printing again at 100% with fit-to-page off.

The same logic runs the other way on this site: the DPI test uses the card's standardised length to measure how far your mouse says it moved, no ruler involved.

Why your screen cannot be a ruler

On paper, a millimetre in the file is a millimetre on the sheet, which is what printing at 100% means. On screen there is no such promise: the browser assumes a nominal pixel density that rarely matches the physical panel, so the ruler above displays close to true size on some monitors and visibly off on others. That is a fact about displays, not a fault of the page, and it is measurable: the difference between assumed and physical density is exactly what makes on-screen rulers untrustworthy and mouse DPI measurable only against physical references. Print the ruler for real measurements; use the screen version for reading practice only.
